He was gone about five minutes. When he came back the seventh drop was lying in the beaker.\n\nNobody has ever seen a drop fall from that funnel. Not Thomas Parnell, who built it. Not Mainstone, who gave it fifty-two years. Not the thirty thousand people who were streaming it live in 2014.\n\nThe apparatus sits in a display cabinet at the University of Queensland. Parnell, the university's first professor of physics, heated a sample of pitch in 1927, poured it into a glass funnel with the stem sealed, and left it three years to settle. In October 1930 he cut the stem. He was making a teaching point: pitch shatters like toffee if you hit it with a hammer, and is nevertheless a liquid — around a hundred billion times more viscous than water, but a liquid, and given a funnel and enough patience it will drip.\n\nIt took eight years to produce the first drop. It has produced nine in ninety-five, which is the record Guinness recognises: the longest-running laboratory experiment there is.\n\nThe demonstration, though, was finished in 1938. The drops since have been used to put a number on the viscosity — that hundred billion — but as a measuring series they are poor, because the cabinet has never been temperature-controlled. It stands in a foyer, and pitch runs faster in a Queensland summer. When the university air-conditioned the nearby lecture theatres in the 1990s, the interval between drops stretched from about eight years to about thirteen. What Parnell left behind is not really an instrument. It is a machine for producing witnesses, and in ninety-five years it has produced none.\n\nMainstone inherited it in 1961, after a colleague pointed out the thing gathering dust in a cupboard. He talked the university into displaying it and spent the rest of his working life as its custodian. He missed the sixth drop by a day; it went over a weekend in April 1979. He missed the seventh by those five minutes at Expo. By November 2000 there was a camera on the funnel, and the feed went down for about twenty minutes, and the eighth drop went in the gap.\n\nRead those in order. A day, five minutes, twenty minutes. The misses get more precise as the equipment gets better and they do not get rarer, which is the part worth stopping on, because it means this was never a story about bad luck.\n\nA drop of pitch takes twelve or thirteen years to form and something under a second to let go. No arrangement of human beings covers that ratio. You can attend to one thing for an hour; on a remarkable day, three. The experiment moves about ten times more slowly than the Australian continent drifts, and then it finishes faster than you can set down a cup. Mainstone was not unlucky. He was correctly matched.\n\nThe first pitch drop anyone has on film fell in Dublin, in July 2013, out of a funnel nobody had been guarding. Trinity College has had one since 1944, set up in the same spirit as Parnell's and then left alone for most of a century in a lecture hall. The Brisbane story had made it interesting again, so physicists there put a camera in front of it. The camera got it — a black blob detaching and landing, the first such event ever recorded.\n\nIt did not win by watching harder. It was not watching. It was *recording*, which is a different act and requires nobody to be in the room.\n\nMainstone was alive for that. He died the following month, at seventy-eight.\n\nThen came the famous one, and it is the fact that finishes the argument. In April 2014 the Brisbane funnel delivered its ninth drop, and this time the world was ready: three webcams, and upwards of thirty thousand people registered to the stream from a hundred and sixty countries. On 12 April the drop came down and touched the eighth drop still standing in the beaker below. The eighth sat slightly nearer the camera and screened the join, so the moment everyone had tuned in for took place behind something. The drop then hung there, attached at both ends, for twelve more days.\n\nIt separated on 24 April, while the beaker was being changed. The old one had filled up and had to come out. Somebody reached in, and that is what freed it.\n\nThirty thousand people watching, and the ninth drop was released by the housekeeping.\n\nThere is a clean beaker under the funnel now and the tenth drop is forming. Andrew White is the third custodian. Parnell and Mainstone were given the 2005 Ig Nobel Prize in physics, and Mainstone accepted on both their behalves with a straight face, noting that his late colleague had at any rate set a new record for the lead time between performing an experiment and being honoured for it.\n\nThe live feed is still running, and it comes with an offer that took ninety-five years to arrive at.
