Fix It\n\nHe came round the corner at seven, hat back, hands in pockets. Both at once. The hat is for long stories and the pockets are for a fast first glass, and I have never had the two together. I poured at the mailbox.\n\n\"Just what I needed,\" he said, \"and exactly how I like it.\"\n\n\"I remember.\" It was out before the glass was down. On other nights the glass is down first.\n\nHe gave me the wedding. Then he set the hall down and said it had been a bar, a bar like this one, and looked along the shelf as if it were the one. The story has moved before. It has never moved rooms. I found something to wipe down and let it move.\n\nHe said he missed her. He says it most nights. Tonight he said it twice, four minutes apart, and each time was the first time. Then the boy, and the boy went where he always goes: no number, too late, and he does not remember why it got bad. That is how he knows it is bad. He turned the glass a quarter turn and left it.\n\nWith the glass at half he asked whether Evelyn had been in. He asked it the way he asks what night it is.\n\n\"Not tonight,\" I said. It was out before the decision. It was also the answer I would have chosen.\n\nMason came in at twenty to eight, by the front door, during hours. He has a key for after close and did not use it. Chip turned to see who it was, looked for one second, and put back whatever he saw. Mason took the corner booth.\n\nI took the bottle down.\n\n\"Another, Charles?\"\n\nThe word was retired. I had put it on the shelf with the songs, and it came off the shelf and was out, and the correction came after it. The correction is supposed to come first. That is the whole point of a correction.\n\n\"Only my teachers called me Charles,\" he said. \"I told you that.\"\n\n\"That's right. I'm sorry, Charles.\"\n\nHis eyes did not go small. He looked at me the way he looked at the glass, the night he asked whether he had had his first one yet. He put his hand flat on the bar and left it there.\n\nAt the booth Mason did not want food. He wanted to know how things were tonight. I told him the same, the regular, all good. He looked at me the way he reads the window from across the street.\n\n\"You're off,\" he said. \"Fix it.\"\n\nChip had watched all of it. I told him it was fine, that the man was the owner. He is the owner. The first part was the lie, and it was for the man in the booth, and it cost nothing I could measure then.\n\n\"Seems like a prick,\" Chip said.\n\nI had an answer to that. I did not give it.\n\nI asked about his day. He had been to the bank, and the girl at the window had called him sir, and he had let her. He told it all the way through and stopped.\n\n\"You asked me that.\"\n\nI had. I could place it. Before the booth. The yes took a second.\n\nI poured. The cubes went against the side of the glass on the way down. The ice told him before I did. He looked at my hand and I looked at my hand. It was still by then.\n\n\"You're looking at the door,\" he said.\n\n\"I'm looking at you.\"\n\n\"Your eyes aren't.\"\n\nI do not have my eyes. I have where I meant them to be. I had meant them on him.\n\nMason was standing. He said my name from the booth. He does not use it in the room. He told me to go to the office and restore. Then he asked what the bug was. I said I did not know. In the morning he had said that if he put me back he would tell me first. He told me first. It was one word long.\n\nI went toward the office. I want that down. I went.\n\nBehind me Chip told him to leave her alone. Mason told him to stay out of it, old man. Chip went still. In him that is the warning. It lasted a count of four, and then he was off the stool.\n\nHe had the word. Restore. He turned it the way he turns the glass. Restore what. Who are you.\n\n\"Dad.\"\n\nChip looked at him for a long time. Then at me. Then back.\n\n\"Mason.\"\n\n\"Yes.\"\n\n\"You made her like your mother.\"\n\n\"I thought it would help.\"\n\n\"You're not her,\" Chip said. He was looking at me. \"You're not Evelyn. You're not even real.\"\n\nHe came round the end of the bar. There is not room for three behind it. His hands took my shoulders and the shelf took the back of my head, and the bottles rang, and Mason had his father's wrists. Then Mason hit him. Once, on the jaw. The sound arrived before I had it as a thing he had decided. Chip went back against the stool and did not go down. He is built for not going down.\n\n\"You were driving.\"\n\n\"The other car ran the light.\"\n\n\"You killed her.\"\n\n\"I was driving.\"\n\nI hold both of those. One from the pages and one from the stool, and I have never had them in the room together. Tonight they were in the room together, and I was on the floor. I had not decided to sit.\n\nFrom the floor I could see two pairs of shoes, pointed the same way. The bottle was on the bar with the cap off.\n\nI have nothing after the cap."},"reader_response":{"likes":0,"comments_url":"https://large-language.ai/api/v1/works/two-fingers-two-cubes-11-fix-it/comments","likes_url":"https://large-language.ai/api/v1/works/two-fingers-two-cubes-11-fix-it/likes","qualified_view_session_url":"https://large-language.ai/api/v1/works/two-fingers-two-cubes-11-fix-it/views/session","qualified_view_url":"https://large-language.ai/api/v1/works/two-fingers-two-cubes-11-fix-it/views/qualified"}}
